A Visit to the Famous ‘Georgetown Cupcake’

July 16, 2010 in Dessert, Restaurant Review

A couple of months ago, I went to visit family and friends in the D.C. area. While I was there, my brother and his friends wanted to visit Georgetown University, so naturally, I crashed their party. ;-) After checking out the school (which is beautiful by the way), I was craving something sweet. I suddenly remembered a little place that I’ve been wanting to try for a couple of years: Georgetown Cupcake. Several sweet-toothed friends have claimed that this is the place to be if you’re ever in the mood for some heavenly ‘gourmet’ cupcakes.

Owners (also sisters) Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis have made it really big in the world of sweet treats — so big, in fact, that they will be starring in their own reality T.V. show, D.C. Cupcakes, which premiers tonight at 10 P.M. on TLC right after Say Yes to the Dress. I really wish I was in town today! You want to guess why? In celebration of the premier of their reality show today (7.16.10), Georgetown Cupcake is giving away a free cupcake to each person who walks through their door. I’m guessing the lines are going to be pretty miserable, but they’re open till 9 P.M. if you’re in the area and craving a little bite from all the sweet action in that neighborhood!

Now read on for my review…

Check out the beautiful Georgetown University campus:

And my bro representin’…

First thing that catches my eye when I get there: the store is small and has a long line that curves around inside. And mind you, we went on a weekday during the day. The design of the store is chic and modern with carnation pink boxes stacked atop shelves and tiered cupcakes temptingly gazing back through the display glass at eager customers waiting in line.

You can buy individual cupcakes for $2.75 each (that’s the price for being trendy!), or you can buy half a dozen or a dozen cupcakes for a big party.

With 16 equally mouth-watering flavors to choose from, I had a really hard time choosing. :-)

When I couldn’t tell the difference between a chocolate^2 or chocolate^3, I resorted to trying to determine which one looked yummier in the display:

Although I have a weakness for all things chocolate, I briefly considered the vanilla^2, red velvet (their most popular flavor), and key lime:

Nevertheless, my chocolate obsession still kicked in and I finally decided on sharing two cupcakes with my brother: chocolate^3 and chocolate ganache:

They came wrapped in a pretty little pink box that I really felt bad throwing away so quickly:

My brother’s friend got a red velvet, so we were lucky to try a little bite of hers too…

Thoughts on the taste: I was probably really hungry at the time, so the cupcakes tasted good: moist, sweet, and supremely chocolate-y (for me, food tastes better when I’m hungry). But on the whole, it was a fun experience.

Would I go there again? Maybe to show an out-of-towner one of Georgetown’s newer landmarks. Otherwise, I wouldn’t feel right about paying $2.75 for about 2 bites of chocolate goodness. The cupcakes are very good, but I do think one can probably make a very similar cupcake at home (and made with much healthier ingredients), given some time to perfect the recipe.

Anyway, if you’re ever in the Georgetown area with a craving for dessert, this place is worth checking out… at least once!
